BIRD HOUSE
MUSQUIDOBOIT, CANADA
Nestled in Costa Rica’s coastal mountains, Mountain House is a retreat for a trans-continental family, designed to embrace the contrasts between tropical living and the northern American lifestyle. This home redefines daily life, blending openness, comfort, and sustainability.
Expansive rolling screen doors open the living space completely to the view, inviting the landscape into the home. A spacious covered terrace extends the living area, creating a seamless flow and connection with the surrounding natural setting.
Thick rammed concrete walls on the southern facade provide thermal mass, absorbing intense sunlight by day and releasing warmth at night. Deep-set operable windows allow ventilation while minimizing heat gain, creating a home attuned to the tropical environment.
At the heart of the home, the hearth serves as both a visual anchor and a gathering space. Evoking the timeless tradition of gathering around a fire, it unites the home while creating subtle separation within the main living area.
